As the game theme was carpet weaving, Rezakhani delved into the study of different design styles, modifying them to reconcile the game's rules and taking advantage of the abstract visual alphabet. The player boards represent specific cities in Iran that are renowned for their handmade carpets. Each city is characterized by both common motifs in the area and the most remarkable architectural symbol of the region. This integration adds depth and authenticity to the gameplay experience.
What sets Dastbaf apart is its visual identity, which follows the common symbolism and abstraction found in Persian carpet design. This allows players to not only interact with each other but also to become part of the game's narrative. The product name, Dastbaf, derives from the common Persian title that designates handmade rugs, further emphasizing the game's connection to Persian culture.
Rezakhani utilized Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Fresco software to bring the game to life. The result is a visually stunning and meticulously crafted board game that captures the essence of Persian carpet design.
The package dimensions of Dastbaf are 30 cm * 30 cm * 6.5 cm, ensuring a compact and convenient storage solution for players.
Throughout the design process, Rezakhani conducted extensive research on Persian geometry and motif styles. Books on the subject, articles discussing the impact of geographical location on carpet design, and websites showcasing Persian carpets all contributed to enriching the designer's knowledge in this field.
One of the main challenges faced during the design process was creating a central playboard that effectively separated players' actions into the two main processes of the game. Rezakhani overcame this challenge by designing an octagonal-shaped board with five arched structures, each representing a player. The illustration on the board incorporates day and night features, guiding players' actions in different playing processes and evoking the visual atmosphere of an old Persian Bazaar.
Dastbaf is a testament to the beauty and intricacy of Persian carpet design. By combining gameplay with cultural elements, the game offers a unique and immersive experience for players. The illustrations, color diversity, and dancing motifs featured on the package further enhance the visual identity of the game.
It is important to note that Dastbaf is protected by copyright under Houpaa Publication.
In recognition of its outstanding design and creative ingenuity, Dastbaf was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Toys, Games, and Hobby Products Design category in 2023. This prestigious award honors designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills while contributing to improvements in quality of life.
